In this morning's edition, New York Daily News TV critic David Hinckley writes about WABC's "Rewound" special airing today:
"If you think it would be cool to hear WABC's Don Imus as a WNBC top-40 jock, or the late Bob Lewis introducing an early unofficial version of the Beatles' "White Album" on WABC-FM in 1968, those are just two good reasons to lock the radio into WABC's annual 12-hour "Rewound" special."
"Rewound," assembled by former WABC jock and current WABC engineer Johnny Donovan, replays hour-long segments from the days when WABC was the biggest top-40 station in the universe.
Donovan notes that some "Rewound" purists are concerned about the Imus hour, since he was never on WABC until last December.
"But he was a top-40 jock at WNBC," says Donovan, "and he was really good. We put this hour together from a lot of snippets, but it goes together well. You hear him introducing and talking up records, you hear Billy Sol Hargis, all of what he was doing when he came to New York."
Last summer Imustruth posted several of Imus' old shows, to help everyone get through the dark days when he was in exile at the ranch. In the media player on the right, you'll find several vintage Imus clips. #207 is of Imus' first day back at WABC in 1972 after being fired and sent to Cleveland. #199 and #200 are from WNBC in 1988. There's also a long clip of Imus playing country records in Cleveland.
