Gobsmacked on the Don Imus Show

Debra Dickerson writes about her appearance on Imus' show:

"Damned if Imus hasn't been doing yeoman's work in moving America's neurotic race obsession forward. I've been talking and writing about race for 12 years now, but I was gobsmacked on the air. Imus schooled a sister. When he said he was through apologizing for Rutgers, I took that to mean he was through talking about it. But he's certainly not through thinking about it, and he's been doing his homework."

March 31, 2005: Blind Boys of Alabama

WFAN management bitched about them.  The MSNBC bigwigs worried they'd get horrible ratings.  On March 31, 2005 Imus brought them on anyway.   Here's a clip of the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Imus' friendship with Bishop G.E. Patterson

Nothing explains the real Don Imus like his friendship with the late Bishop G.E. Patterson.

Bishop Patterson presided over the Church of God in Christ-- one of the largest religious denominations in world.  The predominantly black Protestant church, headquartered in Memphis, claims 6 million members worldwide and traces its origins to the to the late 1800s.

Over the years Bishop Patterson and Imus struck up a friendship.  Bishop Patterson appeared several times on Imus' show.  Imus used Bishop Patterson's sermons as bumpers on the program, exposing millions of radio listeners to his style of preaching.

When Bishop Patterson died in March at the age of 67, his widow spoke for the first time on Imus in the Morning.  Louise Patterson phoned in on March 22, to speak about her late husband and his friendship with Imus.
